ABOUT US

POWERING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH ENERGY EFFICIENCY

The Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) Program promotes inclusive, low-carbon development by providing and promoting energy-efficient solutions and boosting energy-efficiency investments in the industrial sector with the end goal of market stimulation.

The EELA Program Structure

EELA operates through a strategic combination of regional initiatives and country-specific interventions. Launched in 2019, the project has evolved into a comprehensive framework. This dual structure allows EELA to address both systemic barriers at the regional level and specific needs at the country level, creating a comprehensive approach to energy efficiency market development. With ambitions to expand into new countries and regions in Africa from 2025 onwards, EELA continues to grow its impact and reach.

The EELA Regional Program

Creates the market and institutional conditions necessary for sustainable and inclusive energy sector transformation across three major regional economic communities: the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the East African Community (EAC), and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This involves enhancing regional policy harmonization and regulatory frameworks, building the capacities of key stakeholders, and supporting local energy efficiency markets through private sector development.

WHY EELA MATTERS

One-third of global greenhouse gas emissions originate from the industrial sector. More energy-efficient manufacturing practices are needed to drastically reduce these emissions and put the world on track to net zero. Africa urgently needs access to more efficient, affordable and sustainable solutions. EELA enables market access for high-quality solutions through MEPS, awareness campaigns, and technical support.

Energy efficiency represents one of the most cost-effective pathways to enhance energy security, reduce costs, and minimize environmental impact while supporting economic development.

LOCAL IMPACT THROUGH COUNTRY WINDOWS

EELA KENYA

EELA Kenya supports national energy efficiency strategies and the industrial sector's transition to clean technologies. This includes training programs for off-grid solar, cooling, and maintenance skills as part of the industrial energy efficiency project, with a particular emphasis on the tea industry.

EELA ZAMBIA

EELA Zambia strengthens local value chains and e-waste management while introducing digital training tools to scale skills development in the energy industry and beyond.

EELA ZIMBABWE

EELA Zimbabwe focuses on energy efficiency in key sectors, supports e-waste policies, and aligns with the country's National Energy Efficiency Policy and Low Emission Development Strategy, contributing to energy policies for sustainable development.

WHERE EELA OPERATES

SCALING INNOVATION

EELA empowers the private sector through the soon-to-be-launched Industry Clean-Tech Platform (ICTP), a one-stop-shop linking manufacturers, service providers, financiers and policymakers to support clean tech deployment and investment in energy efficiency. The platform will serve as a central hub offering industries access to resources such as technology transfer, training, and financing to support the shift toward cleaner production methods.

By connecting manufacturers, service providers, financiers, and policymakers, the platform will facilitate knowledge exchange, technical assistance, and investment mobilization for clean technology deployment and energy efficiency implementation across industrial sectors.

SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

From reducing energy bills to enabling industrial competitiveness and empowering women through access to sustainable energy, EELA delivers systemic impact.

Our integrated approach combines policy support, business innovation, public awareness and skills development. This creates long-term change across the continent, supporting global energy management and sustainable development.
