Harmonisation of Energy Standards and Industrial Motor Standards for SADC Region

text
Held in the framework of SADC Industrialization Week, this EELA webinar seeks to underscore the strategic value of regional standards harmonization for sustainable development.
30 July 2025

The main objective of this webinar is to create awareness on energy efficiency opportunities and mobilise key stakeholders to participate in the energy efficiency sector. This is expected to influence the key energy efficiency stakeholders to invest more in energy efficiency. Energy efficiency is crucial for individual, community, and global well-being. It offers a pathway to reduce energy costs, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve energy security. As energy efficiency continues to gain attention as a key resource for economic and social development across all economies, understanding its real value is increasingly important. The multiple benefits approach to energy efficiency policy seeks to expand the perspective of energy efficiency beyond the traditional measures of reduced energy demand and lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by identifying and measuring its impacts across many different spheres

The side event offers two sessions looking at;

  1. Parallel Session: Harmonising Energy Standards: A Regional Blueprint for Sustainability.

Harmonising energy standards across a region is crucial for promoting sustainability, ensuring energy access, and fostering economic development. It involves establishing consistent regulations, policies, and practices that support energy efficiency, renewable energy adoption, and responsible energy consumption

  1. Presentations: Regional Harmonization of Industrial Motor Standards: Unlocking Cross-Border Energy Efficiency Gains and Trade Opportunities SADC is actively working to advance Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) to improve energy efficiency within the region. This initiative aims to establish the minimum energy efficiency levels that industrial motors   must meet before being sold or imported into SADC markets
