EELA Kenya at Kenya Industrialization Summit 2026
The EELA Program: Advancing energy efficiency for sustainable livelihoods
Energy efficiency is more than a technical solution. It is a practical tool for strengthening industrial competitiveness, reducing energy costs and supporting inclusive, low-carbon development.
At the Kenya Industrialization Summit 2026, the Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) Program will showcase how EELA Kenya is working with national and international partners to turn energy-efficiency opportunities into practical solutions for industries, businesses and communities.
The Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) Program promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth by accelerating the uptake of high-performing, affordable and energy-efficient products, services and industrial equipment.
Funded by the Government of Sweden and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the programme combines regional cooperation with targeted country-level action. It supports market transformation, increased investment in industrial energy efficiency and the development of sustainable local value chains for energy-efficient products and services.
The EELA Kenya Country Window
The EELA Kenya Country Window translates the programme’s regional ambition into interventions tailored to Kenya’s national priorities and market conditions. The project seeks to stimulate inclusive and sustainable economic growth through three interconnected areas of action:
- accelerating the uptake of energy-efficient appliances;
- increasing investment in the low-carbon transformation of industry; and
- developing skills for the repair, maintenance and end-of-life treatment of energy-efficient equipment.
Together, these interventions support a more competitive and resource-efficient economy while expanding access to the technologies, services and skills needed for a sustainable energy transition.
Donor: Government of Sweden
National counterparts and partners: Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of Kenya, Kenya Association of Manufacturers, Kenya Bureau of Standards, Swedish Energy Agency and the East African Centre of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Efficiency.
Why Energy Efficiency?
Energy efficiency can help Kenya reduce operating costs, strengthen industrial competitiveness and relieve pressure on the electricity system, while supporting the country’s energy and climate objectives.
Lower costs and stronger industries
By reducing unnecessary energy consumption, businesses can lower operating costs and limit their exposure to energy-price volatility. These savings can free up resources for productive investment and help Kenyan industries become more competitive.
More reliable, modern production
Investments in modern energy-efficient technologies, better control systems and improved operating practices can enhance energy performance and equipment reliability. They can also support industrial modernisation and cleaner production.
Better livelihoods and economic opportunities
Energy efficiency helps connect economic development with more responsible use of energy and natural resources. Efficient appliances and productive-use equipment can reduce household and business expenditure, improve productivity, limit post-harvest losses and support local employment and enterprise development.
