New Program Announcement: Energy Efficiency for sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) – Accelerating Investments, Promoting Innovative Business Models and Strengthening Technology Cooperation!
The event announced the expansion of the Energy Efficiency for Sustainable Livelihoods in Africa (EELA) program, with a new €20 million commitment from the Swedish Government. The program is implemented by UNIDO with regional and international partners and aims to drive market transformation by promoting high-performing, affordable, and energy-efficient appliances, increasing industrial sector investments, and fostering sustainable local value chains for energy-efficient products and services.
Mr. Ciyong Zou delivered the opening remarks, welcoming high-level guests such as H.E. Mr. Mattias Frumerie, Climate Ambassador and Head of Sweden's Delegation to the UNFCCC; H.E. Ambassador Anna Lindstedt, Senior Advisor at the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs; Ms. Gloria Magombo, Permanent Secretary of Zimbabwe’s Ministry of Energy and Power Development; Mr. Eng. Isaac Kiva, Secretary for Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum of Kenya, along with representatives from ministries, industry, and the private sector.
Ms. Rana Ghoneim highlighted the program’s significant achievements until to date, including the adoption of region-wide Minimum Energy Performance Standards for lighting and cooling appliances, successful ESCO-model investment projects, the launch of an e-learning platform and further capacity-building efforts including equipment provision and training for testing facilities. After five years of successful implementation, the program has expanded its reach, now covering the SADC, EAC, and ECOWAS regions, along with EELA Country Windows in Kenya, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Furthermore, the EELA Industry Clean-Tech Platform was introduced, which aims to facilitate private sector investments in sustainable energy solutions for industrial applications, driving the transition to cleaner, more energy-efficient technologies and promoting long-term sustainability in the industrial sector.
